Hi All I've been looking into the best way to redirect people accessing a site via handheld devices, to a dedicated page for mobile users. I've found references teaching me how to do this via javascript and php, but i wondered if anyone knew a server side way eg via htaccess file?? I have only so far found this - but unsure of how to use it or whether this is the way to do it: To achieve a similar effect with server-side technologies on an Apache server, we use a Rewrite Rule: # This rewrite rule should be ...

I came across this code today, and wanted to share. It is PHP to detect if you are surfing from a mobile phone. I will probably play around with it on the weekend. <?php function detect_mobile_device() { // Check if the user agent value claims to be windows but not windows mobile if(stristr($_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'],'windows') && !stristr($_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'],'windows ce')) { return false; } // Check if the user agent gives away any tell tale signs it's a mobile browser ...

Hello, I have recently began coding using XHTML 1.0 transitional for structure and styling and presentation using CSS. When validating against W3C's validation service, there reports contain no errors, etc. At the very least, that's a good sign. Anyway, what I want to know, is if such mark-up can be accessed using WAP? Because I thought that it was, but when i tried using WAP to view the site, I get a 406 Error (i seem to remember...). I have'nt tried it using PDAs (as i don't have one) but someone told me ...

Can anyone answer a question that I am struggling to get to the bottom of, Can you send SMS messages in 3G ? My G1 shows 3g on the handset but is it actually sending the message via 3G or the traditional GSM network ? Doesn't seem to be a definitive answer on the web, Anyone got any ideas ? Was always my understanding that while you are connected to 3G you are still connected to the voice network - CDMA, GSM or whatever the case may be - over which your phone actually sends SMS. When I had a Verizon ...

I am trying to make WAP site all things are good just one problem. The images in detail page show big (original) i don't want to resize it. What i have to do so that it fit in screen in any mobile instead of choosed one. Apply a % width to the div that contains the image and then when this detects a certain sized screen it will resize automatically. Other than that I would suggest that you maybe run a quick test for the screen size and have a different CSS file accordingly

What are you using to detect mobiles (cellphones, iPhones, PDAs, etc) ? Do all WAP browsers send an HTTP_X_WAP_PROFILE header, or is that just a Nokia thing ? What about an HTTP_VIA header, could that be a good indication that a mobile device is the one requesting the page ? My Nokia sends "application/xhtml+xml" in the HTTP_ACCEPT header, it also sends some values with "wap" in them, could this header be good to check ? I could check the HTTP_USER_AGENT for mobile names, but that seems like it would ...
